A California native, Rebecca Noelle’s love of homeland and nature has led her to plein air, or outdoor painting. She spends much of her time on location capturing the beaches, gardens, mountains, and architecture of San Diego. Rebecca believes that plein air paintings are not only artistic expressions of moments in time but also important historical records of local landscapes that may change or even disappear. She works in oil paint on panels, using both the brush and palette knife.

Rebecca is also a teacher and has spent many happy years teaching art to San Diego students in grades K-6. In 2017, she was named Volunteer of the Year at the San Diego Rescue Mission for her work facilitating art classes and exhibitions for adults in recovery. Currently, Rebecca teaches a weekly plein air painting class in historic Balboa Park, sharing the joy of landscape painting with students of all ages.

I feel very lucky to have been born and raised in Southern California, surrounded by nature and free to explore and experiment creatively. I come from a long line of artists and gardeners and grew up in my mom’s flower shop, so I tend to gravitate toward gardens and nature in my life and work. Trained primarily as a plein air oil painter, I spend most of my time outdoors working on location, taking in the environment with all my senses. The smell of the cool forest air, the winter sea, or the hot, dry desert. The sounds of wildlife, musicians, people. The smooth softness of the board beneath my brush or knife as I interpret a beautiful moment in time. I wake up with a spark of joy each day, wondering what I will experience and paint, and I feel like I could never live long enough to satisfy this passion.
